Kazakhstan has developed a technology for converting asbestos waste into valuable materials
Kazakh scientists have proposed a solution for converting industrial waste into in-demand industrial products, BAQ.KZ reports.
The development was carried out by specialists from the National Center for Integrated Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with Kostanay Minerals.
What was developed
Scientists have developed a technology for recycling chrysotile asbestos waste. The project was implemented as part of a program for the commercialization of scientific developments with the support of the Science Foundation.
During the work, a patented pilot plant was launched, which has already been validated.
What products are obtained
The new technology allows for the production of products with high added value.
Specifically, bischofite, a magnesium compound, and high-purity synthetic carnallite are produced from waste.
These materials are in demand in industry, including for magnesium production.
Why is this important
Carnallite is used at the Ust-Kamenogorsk Titanium and Magnesium Plant for the electrolytic production of magnesium. Currently, the company purchases it abroad.
The implementation of this new technology will partially replace imports and reduce dependence on external supplies.
This development opens up opportunities for more efficient use of man-made resources and the development of waste recycling in Kazakhstan.
When implemented commercially, this technology could be an important step in the development of the magnesium industry and increasing the country's technological independence.
