A scientific development from Kazakhstan received international recognition at the ERSGIT 2026 conference in China

13.10.2026

A research project by scientists from the D.A. Kunayev Mining Institute (a branch of the National Center on Complex Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan) was honored with the "Best Oral Presentation Award" at the 5th International Conference on Environmental Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Technologies (ERSGIT 2026) in Nanjing, China. The forum was hosted by the Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology.

Scientists from the D.A. Kunayev Mining Institute presented research findings regarding the spatiotemporal analysis of ground deformations at the flooded Mirgalimsay deposit and the adjacent territory of the city of Kentau. They also showcased "GeoMonitor.AI," a geoinformation web system developed for monitoring deformations at mining sites.

The study utilizes satellite radar interferometry methods – specifically PS-InSAR (Persistent Scatterer Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) and SBAS-InSAR (Small Baseline Subset Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar) – combined with GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) data. This integrated approach enables the identification of land surface subsidence and uplift zones, the assessment of horizontal displacements, and the pinpointing of areas requiring further ground-based inspection. The practical significance of the work lies in improving the monitoring of deformation processes and enhancing safety at mining operations. The GeoMonitor.AI web-based geoinformation system (https://geomonitor.igd.com.kz:8080) is designed for the management, analysis, and visualization of data from integrated ground-based and spaceborne monitoring. The system integrates results from satellite InSAR analysis and GNSS observations with map layers, information on potentially hazardous deformation zones, areas susceptible to suffosion-karst processes, and urban infrastructure assets. It enables not only the display of monitoring results on an interactive map but also the analysis of displacement time series, the cross-referencing of data from various observation methods, and the identification of priority areas for further ground-based inspection. The developed system is used to monitor mining lease areas, adjacent settlements, and infrastructure facilities.

"It was important for us to demonstrate that modern observation methods can be combined into a practical digital tool. GeoMonitor.AI enables a shift from fragmented data to a comprehensive analysis of the territory – something particularly important for mining regions and nearby communities," noted Amina Baltiyeva, a leading researcher at the D.A. Kunayev Institute of Mining (IGD).

This award confirms the international significance of the research findings and showcases the potential of Kazakhstani science in developing modern digital solutions for the mining industry. Participation in the conference also facilitated the exchange of expertise with international specialists, the strengthening of global scientific ties, and the identification of future research prospects in the fields of satellite monitoring and geoinformation technologies.
