Young scientists at the Zh. Abishev Chemical-Metallurgical Institute are working on technologies to produce ferrotitanium from domestic raw materials. The research aims to enhance the efficiency of metallurgical production and expand the use of Kazakhstan's raw material resources, reports Kazinform.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan, ferrotitanium is widely used in metallurgy. Adding titanium improves the properties of steel, making it stronger and more durable. Consequently, scientists are seeking more accessible and efficient methods for producing ferrotitanium.
Young researchers at the Zh. Abishev Chemical-Metallurgical Institute are tackling this challenge. They are developing a technology to produce ferrotitanium using domestic raw materials – specifically, low-grade ilmenite concentrates and high-ash coal. They are analyzing the physicochemical properties of the starting materials and conducting thermodynamic modeling, as well as laboratory-scale and pilot-scale smelting tests. In particular, they are investigating the potential use of the resulting complex titanium-bearing alloy in the production of ferrotitanium with a titanium content exceeding 65%.
The results obtained establish a scientific and technological foundation for more fully integrating domestic raw materials into metallurgical processing and for the further development of technologies for the comprehensive processing of mineral resources. This approach also focuses on creating resource-efficient solutions for the production of high-demand metallurgical materials.
A distinct aspect of the work involves training young specialists and ensuring their direct participation in the research.
"Training a new generation of specialists is a key component of the work. Young scientists, specialists, and students – including master's students from the Abylkas Saginov Karaganda Technical University and NUST MISIS, as well as master's and bachelor's degree holders – are participating in the research." "They participate in conducting experiments, preparing samples, and processing and analyzing results, thereby gaining practical experience in research work," notes Natalia Lu, Deputy Director for Research at the Zh. Abishev Institute of Chemistry and Metallurgy.
