Ferrotitanium is a critical component for modern metallurgy. The addition of titanium allows you to control the crystalline structure of steel, making it stronger, more resistant to corrosion and high temperatures. Until now, the production of this alloy has remained technologically complex and expensive. A team of young scientists from the Karaganda Chemical and Metallurgical Institute named after Zh. Abishev (a branch of the RSE “National Center on Complex Processing of Mineral Raw Materials”) found a way to change this situation, relying exclusively on the resources of Kazakhstan.
The new development is based on the abandonment of classic expensive raw materials in favor of what was previously considered industrial ballast. Researchers are creating complex titanium-containing reducing agents from substandard ilmenite concentrates and high-ash coals. To prove the effectiveness of the method, the team has already carried out a full cycle of tests: from an in-depth study of the physicochemical properties of the starting materials and thermodynamic modeling to laboratory and enlarged laboratory melts. The main goal of the experiments is to obtain ferrotitanium with a titanium concentration of over 65%.
The results obtained lay the scientific and technological basis for a complete restructuring of the approach to the country's mineral resources. The technology makes it possible not only to extract, but to truly process raw materials that previously remained unclaimed. This forms the basis for the creation of resource-saving industries and reduces the dependence of the Kazakh metallurgy on imported ferroalloys.
In parallel with solving production problems, the institute is solving the personnel problem of the industry, forming a new generation of Kazakh metallurgists. Students and undergraduates work side by side with experienced researchers in the laboratory.
*“An important component of the work is training a new generation of specialists. Young scientists, specialists and students participate in the research, including master’s students from the Karaganda Technical University named after Abylkas Saginov and NUST MISIS, masters and bachelors. They participate in conducting experiments, preparing samples, processing and analyzing results, gaining practical experience in research work,” notes the Deputy Director for Scientific Work at KhMI named after Zh. Abisheva Natalya Lu.
The project develops the long-term scientific traditions of the institute in the field of restoration processes and processing of technogenic raw materials. Today's young researchers are not just continuing the work of their mentors - they are moving Kazakhstan's metallurgical science from the plane of theoretical research to the stage of creating ready-made industrial technologies.
