Researchers at the National Center on Complex Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan have developed a comprehensive technology that enables lithium extraction from low-grade aluminosilicate ores, according to the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Construction of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
The process is based on carbothermic smelting. This innovation enables lithium extraction, effectively separating it from the aluminosilicate residue. In addition to battery metal, the end product also includes FS45 ferroalloys.
The processing of low-grade ores results in a concentrate with a lithium oxide content of 12 to 14%. This is approximately twice the lithium oxide content of other extraction methods.
The production process is also more environmentally friendly than existing technologies. This is achieved by reducing the amount of aggressive sulfuric acid solutions required. From an economic perspective, this helps reduce production costs.
