The development of environmentally friendly industrial waste recycling technologies is a priority area of modern metallurgical science. This task is particularly relevant for enterprises in the chrome and ferroalloy industries, which generate significant volumes of man-made raw materials.
During a working visit to the Institute of Metallurgy of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMET UB RAS, Yekaterinburg), scientists from the Zh. Abishev Chemical-Metallurgical Institute, a branch of the National Center on Complex Processing of Mineral Raw Materials of the Republic of Kazakhstan, met with the staff of the Steel and Ferroalloys Laboratory.
The main outcome of the meeting was the formation of a joint working group, comprising Alexander Kim, Doctor of Engineering Sciences; Ruslan Sultangaziyev, PhD, Associate Professor; and Oleg Zayakin, Doctor of Engineering Sciences.
"Following the meeting, we defined a specific plan for joint work." "The first stage will involve conducting a detailed study of the composition and properties of the waste, determining the forms of chromium, and, based on this, substantiating the most effective technological solutions aimed at reducing the impact of hexavalent chromium and recycling valuable waste components," noted working group member Alexander Kim.
The research will cover waste from the Aktobe Chemical Plant and ferroalloy production in Kazakhstan, as well as from plants in Pervouralsk and Novotroitsk.
Reducing the environmental impact of chromium-containing waste and controlling the formation of hexavalent chromium will reduce the potential environmental impact of production, while recycling will create conditions for the return of valuable components to the production cycle. This could ultimately lead to a reduction in waste accumulation, more efficient use of raw materials, and increased efficiency of industrial processes.
An important part of the working visit was the scientists' participation in an event dedicated to the 95th anniversary of Professor Vladimir Zhuchkov.
Cooperation between the S.N. The Zh. Abisheva Institute of Metallurgy and Metallurgy of the Ural Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (IMET UB RAS) combines the scientific experience and experimental capabilities of two teams and creates a foundation for developing practical solutions in the field of environmentally friendly industrial waste recycling.
